The Romanians (together with Yugoslavia) developed their own fighter-bomber to replace the ageing fleet of MiG-15 and MiG-17 aircraft and decided against buying another Soviet product like the MiG-23BN, Su-22 or Su-25.

The first IAR93 flew from the airbase of Bacau on October 31, 1974 and was piloted by Colonel Gheorghe Stanica. Production was moved to Craiova soon afterwards. The IAR93 programme was hampered by the arms-embargo imposed after the war in former-Yugoslavia. The type was grounded from April 1998.

The IAR93 flew with Regt67 and Regt49 from Craiova and Ianca respectively. The type was under constant development resulting in a few different subversions. The IAR93A had the non-afterburning Viper Mk632 while the IAR93B had the improved Viper Mk633 engines with afterburner. The B-version also had an extended wingroot and other minor adjustments to the airframe. The MB-version had the fuselage of the IAR93B but the non-afterburning engine of the IAR93A.

Most, if not all, IAR93s in Romania are up for sale.

More aircraft than the ones listed above were on the productionline but as these were not completed and were merely hulks these donot count as 'aircraft' I think.

At least seven IAR93s remain in storage at Ianca

If you can help me remove some of the '?' in the list above that would be much appreciated!!
