As is the case with the MiG-23 and MiG-29, the MiG-21bis also carries a linenumber. This particular 4-digit number is sequential and therefore makes much more sense than the constructionnumber, which is unintelligible. Unfortunately only a few numbers are known sofar and these are listed below. If you have the chance to check a MiG-21bis: the constructionnumber plate is in the nosegearbay on a bulkhead on the left side with the plate facing aft. The linenumber is applied on the 'ceiling' of the nosegearbay and cannot be missed when you stick your head in and look up. The linenumber consists of four digits with the first two identifying the batchnumber. The MiG-21bis was most likely constructed in batches of 25 so the highest number used for the last two digits will be 25. The aircraft mentioned below were all VVS or PVO aircraft so it could be MiG-21bis' which were destined for Soviet use received a linenumber while the export-examples did not. This issue can hopefully be clarified by checking export MiG-21bis. Any additions to this list gladly received at the e-mail address mentioned below. |
